I have a theory about who he was prior to his transformation. Be a major spoiler if I'm right, so all I'll say is I think his identity has been foreshadowed by a missing character.
Not that I think the mystery will be solved any time soon, but I'm looking forward to seeing if I'm right :)
Peridot's missing middle brother seems like an obvious candidate, but Fox has been acting really differently from what I'd expect if that were the case...
